Kenya travel guide

Kenya is a wild holiday destination perfect for those seeking a little adventure; it promises un-spoilt beaches and coral reefs with the perfect weather to enjoy them, amazing wildlife parks and mountain scenery with plenty of tours and guides to create your ideal safari trip and ancient Swahili cities to explore.

Sights and places to see in Kenya

You can witness the greatest show on earth for a few weeks every year in Kenya, the Great Wildebeest Migration. The mass movement of hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti in Tanzania, to Masai Mara in Kenya and back again is hard to time with your trip as catching it in one area depends on rain fall which can be highly unpredictable. Even if you do not have the luxury of time to catch the migration your safari and game-viewing experiences will still be rich and varied.

Kenya’s coastline and tropical beaches are equally as inviting as any safari holiday. Kenya is an ideal destination for a beach holiday with fine sands, warm waters and varied water-sports activities to enjoy.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, and the largest freestanding mountain in the world. It is a popular destination for climbers and nature lovers alike. The climb requires no special training or equipment, though time must be taken to acclimatise to the altitude.

Weather, flight and travel information in and around Kenya

Travel Warning – following the widespread post-election unease across Kenya, the country’s situation has since become more stabilised. The potential remains for further unrest however and travellers should seek their government and local Kenyan region advice as there are some areas that have remained calm.

Kenya Airways is the country’s national airline and you can fly direct to Nairobi, British Airways and other airlines also offer direct flights. There is a airport departure tax of US$20, this is usually included in the price of the ticket but worth checking.

Surprisingly Kenyan has about 250 airport or airstrips and plenty of domestic airlines that connect them. Flights can be booked up quickly but flying around and to its neighbouring countries is relatively safe and fairly cheap. Trains are also a popular way to travel and safer than buses.

The Kenyan coast’s average temperature is around 27 degrees and can experience some tropical humidity.  The Northern Plains offers a more dry heat and the plateau and mountain regions have cooler air.
